The Problem
Streaming didn't kill cinema. But it did make the sofa a very convincing alternative. Cineworld's YouTube channel needed to do more than promote films, it needed to remind people why the big screen was worth leaving the house for. They had a massive potential audience but a retention problem. 97% of viewers were non-subscribers, and average view times told a similar story. The content wasn't giving people a reason to come back, online or in person.
The Solution
A rolling programme of YouTube content built around real audience data, giving different viewer segments a genuine reason to engage and the cinema a digital presence that could actually influence behaviour at the box office.
Start with the objective, not the camera
The brief wasn't to make more content, it was to make content that changed behaviour. We started by agreeing on the real objective: shift the perception of cinema from a passive option to an active destination. That clarity shaped every content decision that followed, from format to filming schedule to how success would be measured.
Work with the people who own the message
In this context, that meant working closely with the Cineworld team to make sure every content strand reflected their brand positioning, not just what was easiest to film. The people closest to the Cineworld experience, from staff to enthusiast audiences, shaped what the channel became.
Find the right voice, not just the right title
Cineworld's audience isn't one group. Film obsessives, families, and casual social viewers all needed a reason to engage, and the same voice wouldn't reach all of them. We worked to identify the formats and presenters that would resonate with each segment, from enthusiast-led reactions for hardcore film lovers to accessible roundups for audiences who just wanted to know what was worth seeing this month.
Replace the script with conversation
The content that performed best wasn't the most produced. Trailer reactions and behind the scenes features worked because they felt unscripted and genuine. Our Prompt Method gave contributors the confidence to respond naturally rather than perform for the camera, which is exactly what an audience deciding whether to trust your recommendation needs to see.
The Result
Watch time and retention improved across the channel. More importantly, the content started doing what it was always meant to do, bridge the gap between digital engagement and the box office, and prove that the big screen experience is still worth showing up for.
